Above all, this book is, of course, for the people of Namibia. To gain independence and nationhood they had to resist every sort of pressure a rich and powerful neighbour could impose. Oft in the last hundred years, it must have seemed to them that they stood alone.
Part of this book were written with the generous support of the Rowntree Foundation, which enabled the writer to travel to Namibia and South Africa to conduct final research; of the Centre for Defence Studies at King's College, London; and of the Institute for Conflict Resolution (INCORE) at the University of Ulster in Londonderry. INCORE, supported by the Ireland Funds, conferred on the writer the great honour of being the first occupant of the Tip O'Neill chair of conflict resolution
